School Climate
When you enter Columbus Elementary, the student gathering space is filled with art displays which students have generated under the mentoring of fourteen Minnesota State Arts Board rostered Artists-in-Residents. The entryway is light, warm, colorful and inviting to all who enter. Hallways are often decorated with student work and thematic art displays. You will always find happy and enthusiastic smiles at Columbus!
The Columbus cafeteria, known as the Cougar's Den, is decorated with a Northwoods theme. Birch bark frames hold banners that remind students of proper behavior such as" "Ranger on Duty", "Every Cougar is Part of the Pack," and "Paws and Think."
Our supportive and hard working Parent Teacher Organization has provided funding for two new playground areas built on the north and east sides of the school building. This dynamic group of parents has also facilitated and partially funded the outdoor learning environment erected within the "Tree Trust" program parameters, complete with nature trails, wetlands, and student plantings featuring native plant species.
